The Artwork Process

Models and molds are handcrafted by the artist. A fine durable porcelain formula is mixed to pour into the molds. The greenware is taken out of the mold and then trimmed, cleaned, smoothed, burnished and dried.

The glazes are formulated by the artist, John George.  The mix is sprayed on to the porcelain pieces and dried. They are than carefully loaded into the kiln and fired for 22 hours to 2345 degrees F. on a precise schedule.

The crystals “grow” on the glaze from a temperature, mineral and chemical reaction; much like gems and crystals are formed in the hot center of the earth. The kiln is cooled for 24 hours before unloading. There is a long process of cutting and grinding to smooth any raw or sharp edges.

Crystal patterns are beyond the artists control and there is a high risk of damage during firing. A successful piece is an act of nature and impossible to duplicate.
